Impact and Implementation

Intent

At Fishburn Primary School we aim to develop students’ understanding of the world they live in, its physical and human characteristics, and the interconnections between people, places, and environments. By doing this we intend to foster a deep appreciation and respect for different cultures, societies, and environments, promoting global citizenship and sustainable development. We also focus on nurturing our children’s critical thinking, problem-solving, and investigative skills through engaging with geographical concepts and processes.

The intent of our Geography curriculum is aligned with the National Curriculum for England and ensures that our students acquire the foundational knowledge and skills required for future learning. We also recognise the importance of promoting a seamless progression of geographical understanding from the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) through Key Stage 1 (KS1) and Key Stage 2 (KS2).

Implementation

  1. Curriculum Design and Sequencing

Our Geography Curriculum is carefully designed to ensure a coherent and progressive learning journey for students. It identifies the knowledge, skills, and understanding that students need to develop at each stage, incorporating a balance between local, national, and global perspectives.

Curriculum sequencing builds on prior knowledge, allowing students to deepen their understanding gradually. Skills such as map reading, data interpretation, fieldwork, and investigation techniques are embedded throughout the curriculum, providing opportunities for practical application and experiential learning.

  1. High-Quality Teaching and Learning

We use a wide range of resources including; atlases, online platforms, maps, and globes, to deliver engaging and interactive lessons and enable students to achieve their potential in Geography.

Our lessons are carefully planned, differentiated, and scaffolded to meet the needs of all learners, including those with diverse abilities and backgrounds. We use the Oxford Owl Georgraphy Mastery scheme to inform our planning and provide opportunities for independent and collaborative learning, enabling our children to develop critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

  1. Fieldwork and Practical Experiences

At Fishburn primary school we engage our children in meaningful fieldwork and practical experiences as part of our Geography provision. Children are given the opportunity to engage in real-world learning beyond the classroom, connecting theory to practice and developing a deeper understanding of geographical concepts.

Excursions to local geographical features, such as rivers, coastlines, and historical sites, are organized to facilitate firsthand experiences. Our children also participate in data collection, analysis, and interpretation, honing their geographic skills through hands-on activities.

  1. Cross-Curricular Links and Global Dimension

Our teachers collaboratively plan cross-curricular projects, incorporating geographical concepts into subjects like history, English, science, and art.

Emphasising the global dimension of Geography, the curriculum explores diverse cultures, traditions, and world events. We encourage our children to explore global issues such as climate change, sustainable development, and inequality, fostering a sense of responsibility towards the environment and the wider world.

Impact

Within Geography, we strive to create a supportive and collaborative ethos for learning by providing investigative and enquiry based learning opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. Children are given opportunities for investigations and fieldwork. As children progress throughout the school, they develop a deep knowledge, understanding and appreciation of their local area, and its place within the wider geographical context.

Our Geography curriculum is planned to demonstrate progression. We focus on progression of knowledge and skills and related vocabulary. We support progression using a range of resources, which also form part of the units of work.We also ensure children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is supported and is embedded further during Culture Week.

We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:

  • Formative assessment through marking and feedback.
  • Assessing children’s understanding of topic linked vocabulary before and after the unit is taught using the geography passport.
  • Continuous assessment of pupil discussions about their learning.
  • Interviewing the pupils about their learning.
  • Moderation where pupil’s books are scrutinised and there is the opportunity for a dialogue between teachers to understand their class’s work.
  • Annual reporting of standards across the curriculum.
  • Regular check ins with staff.

Cultural Capital and Geography at Fishburn Primary:

We have carefully planned our Geography curriculum so that there are ample opportunities for children to learn about their own locality, country and places across the world. This allows our children to build up their knowledge incrementally and understand where they fit in the world. Children will have frequent opportunity for fieldwork and trips to the local area as well as further afield. Children will also learn about the impact they have on the world and understand how to explore, discover and preserve and protect our planet.
