PSHE at Fishburn Primary School

Personal, Social, Health and Economic education (PSHE) helps children develop the knowledge and skills to stay healthy and safe, build positive relationships and make informed choices.

We use Jigsaw as our curriculum framework, adapting teaching to meet our pupils’ needs. Our programme includes Relationships Education and Health Education, alongside learning about feelings, aspirations, responsibility and life in the wider community.

How we teach PSHE

Children learn through discussion, stories, practical activities, role-play and reflection. Topics are revisited as children grow, helping them build understanding and apply their learning.

Our long-term plan shows the themes taught throughout the year. We are following Cycle A in 2026/27.

Teachers assess understanding through discussion, observation and children’s work, using this information to address misconceptions and plan further support.

Supporting every child

We adapt teaching so that all children can participate, including those with special educational needs or disabilities. Support may include visual resources, clear explanations, practical examples, additional processing time and personalised activities.

Lessons promote respect for different families, backgrounds and beliefs. Children learn how to recognise unsafe situations and seek help from trusted adults.

Working with parents and carers

We welcome questions about our PSHE curriculum. Parents and carers can request to view teaching materials by contacting their child’s class teacher through ClassDojo or the school office.

We explain relevant adaptations and provide information before additional sex education is taught, including the content and withdrawal arrangements.

Right to withdraw

Relationships Education and Health Education, including puberty education, are statutory. Parents and carers cannot withdraw children from these subjects or from national curriculum science.

Parents and carers may withdraw their child from additional sex education taught outside national curriculum science. Please contact Richard Parkin, Head of School, through the school office to discuss the content and arrange withdrawal. A discussion is welcomed but is not a condition of exercising this right.
