Pupil Premium

‘The pupil premium is additional funding for publicly funded schools in England to raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils of all abilities and to close the gaps between them and their peers.’ (Gov.uk website)

The Government introduced the Pupil Premium in 2011 to provide additional school funding for disadvantaged children; those children in receipt of free school meals (FSM) and also those who had been looked after (by a local authority) for more than six months.

Since the introduction of the pupil premium grant, changes have been made to the eligibility criteria and the funding levels of the premium. The Pupil Premium has increased from £430 per pupil in 2011–12, to £1,345 per primary pupil.  In addition, while eligible Looked After Children previously attracted the same Pupil Premium as those children in receipt of FSM, it has since been enhanced. Current or certain previously Looked After Children each attract £2,345 of funding.

Schools are accountable for the appropriate use of this funding and must ensure it is used effectively to improve the outcomes of disadvantaged children in school.

When making decisions about using pupil premium funding it is important to consider the context of the school and the subsequent challenges faced.  Common barriers for disadvantaged children can be: less support at home, weak language and communication skills, lack of confidence, more frequent behaviour difficulties, attendance and punctuality issues. The challenges are varied.

At Fishburn Primary School, we have high aims for all of our pupils and feel that education is the route out of poverty.  We aim to ensure that all pupils are given every chance to realise their full potential and to challenge barriers to learning.

 

 

PE and Sports Premium

At Fishburn Primary School, we want every child to develop a lifelong love of movement, physical activity and sport. Working alongside Eden Academy Trust, we aim to provide inclusive, enjoyable opportunities that help children develop the skills, confidence and motivation to lead healthy, active lives.

The PE and Sport Premium supports additional and sustainable improvements to our provision. Our investment focuses on strengthening staff expertise, widening opportunities and removing barriers to participation, creating benefits for both current and future pupils.

Our priorities for 2026/27

Our plans focus on five key areas:

• Developing staff expertise: improving teachers’ confidence, knowledge and skills through training, mentoring and practical support from PE specialists.

• Increasing physical activity: encouraging children to be active throughout the school day, including at breaktimes, lunchtimes and through extracurricular opportunities.

• Raising the profile of PE and sport: celebrating participation, effort and achievement, and promoting the contribution physical activity makes to wellbeing and school life.

• Broadening opportunities: providing a wider range of sports and activities so that every child can discover something they enjoy.

• Increasing participation in competitive sport: enabling more pupils to experience festivals, competitions and sporting events with other schools.

Our planned investment

The Trust’s current spending plan identifies an estimated PE and Sport Premium allocation of £7,150 for Fishburn in 2026/27, subject to confirmation of the final allocation. The total planned investment in PE, physical activity and school sport is £13,891.50, exceeding the estimated grant allocation and reflecting our commitment to a broad sporting offer.

Our planned provision includes:

• Staff professional development and specialist mentoring.

• After-school sports clubs.

• Transport to sporting events and participation in cluster activities.

• Specialist balance-bike and scooter programmes.

• Additional swimming support.

• Equipment to improve the range and accessibility of activities.

• Participation in wider sporting opportunities and National Sports Week.

Teachers will work alongside a PE specialist through mentoring and team teaching, then apply their developing expertise independently. This approach builds lasting capacity within the school.

Inclusion and participation

We want every child to feel that PE and sport are for them. We will use pupil feedback, participation information and staff knowledge to identify barriers and support children who are less active or underrepresented in sporting activities.

This includes considering the needs of disadvantaged pupils, children with SEND and those who may lack confidence or previous sporting experience. Adapted activities, appropriate equipment and targeted opportunities will help children participate, enjoy success and develop confidence.

Reviewing our impact

School leaders, our PE lead and the Trust PE lead will review participation, pupil feedback, staff development and the quality of provision throughout the year. We will evaluate how investment improves opportunities for children and how these improvements can be sustained.

Our planned-spend document and annual impact reports explain our investment, intended outcomes and the difference made to pupils.

Swimming and water safety

Swimming and water safety are important life skills. By the end of Key Stage 2, we aim for pupils to:

• Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres.

• Use a range of strokes effectively.

• Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

At the end of the 2025/26 academic year:

65% of the year 6 pupils could swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of 25 metres.
65% of the year 6 pupils could use a range of strokes effectively.
65% of the year 6 pupils could perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

Our 2026/27 plan includes additional swimming support to help pupils who need further opportunities to develop these skills. Year 6 swimming outcomes are published alongside our PE and Sport Premium reporting.
